Snow in the Swiss alps was the majestic winter backdrop for Monica Veal and Joe’l Flückiger’s engagement, while their wedding was celebrated across the globe in Shepparton. The Australian-Swiss marriage was always going to be a festive mix of cultures for Monica and Joe’l.

SNOW PROPOSAL: Joe’l proposed to Monica after a three-hour walk through the forest and snow to watch the sun rise over the picturesque ski village Zermatt. As the sunrise reached the top of the famous Matterhorn, Joe’l revealed the most beautiful ring Monica had ever seen and asked her to marry him.
DRESS DESIRES: Monica chose her wedding dress during her first shopping excursion. “One shop, three dresses and I was done — I love my dress,” she said. “If you love the first or third dress you try on, buy it. Don’t shop around; you’ll go crazy and chances are you’ll end up back at the first store.”
SIMPLE ELEGANCE: Monica had no colours in mind which she said added to her ease of making theming decisions. Fairy lights at the reception created an intimate and fairytale atmosphere. “We kept it simple with candles and flowers for the tables. Flowers do their own thing, so you really don’t need much,” Monica said. “My sisters created little jars of flowers to hang off the church pews.”
CAR CHATS: Monica loved the drive to the church in the old family car with her parents and her next car journey with her husband to Kirwans Bridge for photos. “Joe’l and I hadn’t had time to ourselves for nearly four months, since he only arrived in Australia one week before our wedding. So for just the two of us to be together was really special.”
CULTURAL MIX: Guests travelled from Joe’l’s home country Switzerland and a hymn was sung at the reception in English, German and French. It’s not tradition to have bridesmaids and groomsmen in Switzerland so Joe’l’s brothers enjoyed the novelty of being groomsmen.
LUCKY RAIN: Wet weather added to the atmosphere of the day, Monica said. “I loved it! It made for even more creative photos and it looks great in the wedding film. “It didn’t disturb us at all, besides, it’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day.”
